The primary focus is on learning to play in the jazz style, and putting together a repertoire of songs for contests and performances throughout the school year. Learning jazz is not only a new topic that not only broadens student’s musical horizons, but is uniquely American in origin, and is just plain fun to play!
Organization Contest - Sponsors: Abbey Houser and Emily Miller-Amato
Each spring, the Mayo Concert Band, Choir, and Jazz Band compete in the IESA Organizational Contest. Each group prepares three selections of music for the event, each of very different styles. All ensembles from the east-central Illinois area attend one site, and perform for three judges. They evaluated on tone, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, balance, technique, interpretation, and musical effect. In this contest, ensembles are not ranked against each other, but are evaluated for their own musical performance. Each performing ensemble receives an overall rating, and awards accompany high scores. Organizational contest leads to great musical growth and gain, and is a wonderful opportunity to hear other ensembles of the same age level perform.
Redbird Chefs - Sponsor: Home Community Educators
Redbird Chefs is an intensive cooking experience offered by the University of Illinois Extension. Fifteen students commit to monthly sessions which meet for 1 1/2 hours after school. In these sessions students really learn to cook; from scratch. Some years the group concentrates on different countries and the foods associated with those places and other years the concentration is on different courses or food groups. At the end of the year the students spend the better part of a school day preparing a dinner party for themselves and their invited guests. This is a worthwhile program where everyone gets a chance to learn, have fun and participate.
Redbird Cookers - Sponsor: Home Community Educators
Redbird Cookers is a fun after school opportunity hosted by the University of Illinois Extension and the HOme and Consumer Education group. Students are asked to sign up in the office each month (the first 25 students to sign up) for this 1 1/2 hour session. Students are not asked to make a commitment but are welcome to come each time or just once, whatever their schedules and interests dictate. Each meeting involves the HCE ladies instructing the students in making a craft as well as a snack. This is a fun group and everyone is encouraged to try it.

Solo and Ensemble Contest is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students (and select 5th graders) who are a member of the school’s band and/or choir organization. Starting in late January, students begin to prepare an individual selection of music for their instrument/voice and piano accompaniment, or a work for two or more ensemble members. Students then take their performance to the IESA Solo and Ensemble Contest, where they are judged on the quality of their musical performance. Students receive an overall rating and awards accompany these ratings. In this contest, students are not ranked against others, but are judged based on given criteria for their own age and performance level.
